Ruins of Šelmberk Castle

The ruins of Šelmberk Castle are located on a rocky promontory above the valley of the Blanice River, approximately 2 km northeast of Mladá Vožice in the Tábor district. This castle was founded around 1318 by Přibyslav of Křimín, a member of the Buzic family, who became the founder of the branch of the Lords of Šelmberk.

History of the castle

Šelmberk is a typical example of a bergfrit castle dominated by a 26-metre high cylindrical tower. It was converted into a lookout tower with a romantic battlement in the 1920s and today offers beautiful views of the Tábor, Křemešnice and Vlašim hills.

Crafts and visit

In the castle grounds there is a historical and craft educational centre where visitors can see the pottery and weaving workshop, forge, herb garden and other expositions focused on medieval life.

The castle ruins are freely accessible all year round. The tower is open from April to October, always on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays from 10:00 to 17:00. Parking is available in the village of Běleč, from where a red marked hiking trail leads to the castle.
